UK search marketing spend set to increase

The UK spend on search engine marketing is forecast to increase 58% this year to £2.22bn, with nearly £2bn coming from paid search, according to a new report from e-consultancy.

The report notes that while the rate of growth has dropped from 65% last year, there’s still considerable room for growth in the market.

e-consultancy estimates that the value of paid search alone will near the £2bn mark, reaching around £1.97bn, up 56% from 2006.

But perhaps of particular interest is that for the first time, spend on organic search will grow more quickly, increasing 68% to £252m.

In a survey of search marketers carried out in March, around two thirds said they would be increasing their budgets in the next year for both paid search (65%) and search engine optimisation (64%).

With increasing competition between advertisers, such shifts in spending have become more apparent, with greater investment in SEO and an increased focus on other factors, such as usability, which can all affect search marketing activities.
