Nearly 4 million brits shopped online on Xmas Day

New research indicates that in the UK nearly 4 million of us went online on Christmas Day and spent a grand total of over £100 million.

The research from IMRG, eDigital Research and Secure Trading is particularly revealing about e-tail shopping trends as we move further into the downturn.

Overall there was an increase in spend of 21% on the previous year, though the number of people shopping was actually down on 2007.

Many e-tailers offered sales on Christmas Day, including John Lewis, Boots, Play.com, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams.

The decision by many to launch early sales had a huge impact on online activity, with the result that online traffic increased by 100% from Christmas Day to Boxing Day.

Another trend was for consumers to look at many sites while hunting for the best deals.

Chris Russell, Director at eDigitalResearch observed: “The underlying message that runs through these results is continuing consumer confidence in the online channel which has remained robust throughout the festive period. We expect to see this continue with the online retail channel at the forefront of aggressive sales activity during 2009.”
