Record-breaking £4bn spent online in July

Online shopping hit an all time high during July according to a new report from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG).

Online sales were in excess of £4bn; up 80% year-on-year stated the IMRG, the industry body for the promotion of e-retail.

The wet weather may have contributed to the surge online, preventing travel and encouraging more people to shop online.

Among the most popular items were electrical goods – laptops, MP3 players and digital cameras – the sales of which have almost doubled year-on year. This was followed by strong sales of clothing, footwear and accessories, with an increase of 56%.

The IMRG said internet sales had increased in total to £4.2bn during July, up from £2.34bn in 2006; strongly illustrating the acceleration of growth online and increased confidence in internet shopping.
