Online Christmas sales set to soar to over £4bn
Internet sales are likely to be up 50% this year, and are set to rise even higher in 2008 according to a new report from Deloitte.
The report forecasts that UK online shoppers will spend £200m a day prior to Christmas, with the total yuletide spend likely to be in excess of £4bn.
Deloitte identifies that this growth will continue into next year, citing consumer ease with online shopping, and the increasing availability of goods obtainable via the internet as drivers for continued growth.
It is predicted that Monday, 3 December will be the peak day of the year for online purchasing, as consumers rush to ensure delivery of gifts in time for Christmas.
But soaring online sales are in sharp contrast with the continuing decline in high street spending. However with overall purchasing up, Deloitte’s research suggests that a shift is occurring in channel choice – in favour of online – rather than an actual decline in spend.
Over the past 5 years the number of adults shopping online has doubled to 30 million.
