Facebook accounts for almost 50% of mobile browsing

Social networking site Facebook is the number one destination for UK mobile phone users who use their device to access the internet.

According to the GSM Association, UK mobile owners spent 2.2 billion minutes using Facebook in December alone.

Amazingly, this figure only cover users of 3 of the 5 UK networks - so the actual numbers will be much higher.

Google sites were the second most popular destination, accounting for 395 million minutes. Trailing in third position were Microsoft's sites, followed by those belonging to Orange. The most unusual destination to make the top ten was Flirtomatic, the online flirting and dating service.

The results are perhaps not surprising, given that Facebook is the world's largest social networking site and has easy-to-use applications for popular platforms such as iPhone and Blackberry.

As more and more people use their mobile for browsing the net, savvy companies will take advantage of social networking as a branch of their eCommerce strategy. If you'd like further insight into ways of doing this, get in touch.
