£4.67bn spent online in December 2008
Agile businesses which move quickly to take advantage of online and offline retailing will be best placed to maintain profitability during the current downturn.
The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini Index (Interactive Media in Retail Group) reinforce the ongoing shift toward a hybrid retail model.
The figures show that £4.67bn was spent online in the UK during December 2008.
The Index offers some other interesting statistics:
- Online spend during December 2008 represents an increase of 14.2% on 2007.
- The amount spent equates to an average of £76.67 for every person in the UK.
James Roper, chief executive and founder of IMRG said: “It’s becoming apparent that the recession is accelerating the rate at which the internet is impacting the retail sector.
“Brands that are nimble in a cross-channel environment give their customers a more efficient, easy-to-use service and are rewarded with increased conversion rates and larger average shopping baskets.”
And to reinforce this view figures released by Nielsen Online indicate that the top ten UK online retailers grew by an average of 37% during Christmas 2008 compared with 2007.
