Google introduce new 404 feature in Webmaster Tools

Google are at it again! Yet another useful feature has been added to Google’s Webmaster Tools.

The official Google webmaster blog explains how they are keen to help webmasters retain visitors once they hit your 404 error page.

By inserting a piece of JavaScript code which can be accessed via Tools > Enhance 404 Pages, it will allow you to “embed a widget in your 404 page that helps your visitors find what they're looking for by providing suggestions based on the incorrect URL.”

The screen shot below is an example of this function (taken from Google’s blog):

Google seem to be investing good time and money into developing Webmaster Tools, it will be interesting to see what they release next!

Following on from your comment on what Google will do with webmaster tools next, I think that we are likely to see some kind of transparent and comprehensive Search Engine Result Position system in the webmaster tools interface. In the wake of the recent Rank Checking Software blocking efforts, I can't help but wonder if Google would rather offer (and control) the data themselves, than allow third-party software to automatically query their servers. No doubt time will tell.
