Google AdWords gives green light for gambling websites

In breaking news today from Google AdWords advertisers will be able to bid on gambling related terms as of the end of this week.

As quoted in the Google’s Advertising Policies:

“Google AdWords allows online gambling advertisements to target Great Britain (England, Scotland, or Wales) as long as the advertiser is registered with the Gambling Commission and provides a valid operating license number. Advertisers based outside the UK and within the European Economic Area who wish to target online gambling ads to England, Scotland, or Wales must be licensed to advertise online gambling in their respective country.”

Read the full Advertising Policy post here.

Obviously there will be some red tape to get through first (registration with the Gambling Commission) before you can officially bid on gambling phrases, but I expect advertisers will be scrambling for the application form in order to get some share of the traffic.

Again this is another move by Google to lessen restrictions on bidding in AdWords. And as with the changes over trademarks in recent months this seems like more revenue opening up for AdWords.

What’s your view on this? Do you think this is a good move by Google? Talk to us.

I think it's about time they made this change! Gambling in the UK is perfectly legal if you are over 18 and we've all seen the hundreds of adverts for online bingo on the TV.
It seemed silly to have a policy that didn’t reflect the laws in the country the advert was targeting. I’m sure this is going to be a huge new revenue stream for Google. At the same time I think it’s going to be quite a headache to enforce the new policies. Some sites that promote gambling don’t require registration with the Gambling Commission as they don’t directly offer gambling services, they are simply affiliates, this seems to have been missed by Google’s policy and I’m pretty there are going to be many amendments to follow.
Another problem is that a lot of the sites being advertised by affiliates are based in different countries where different laws apply and sites will need to be verified manually.
