marketing you can measure

Keyword analysis

The focus of search engine optimisation (SEO) is often purely on achieving a high ranking in Google, Yahoo! and MSN. But gaining a good position in natural search is of no benefit if your target keywords don’t attract users and potential customers to click through to your website.

In fact the single most important aspect of SEO is keyword research and analysis. Determining the most relevant keywords to target for your website is the key to success within search.

Keyword selection

A number of points should be taken into account when considering keywords:

  • Relevancy
  • Number of hits being pulled in
  • Amount of competition

Why is relevancy key?

The first part of keyword research and analysis is to compile a list of potential target keywords. All keywords should relate to actual website content that is displayed to the user. If there is no relation between your website and a keyword, you are extremely unlikely to be ranked for this particular term within search.

The next step is to look at each key term and determine its average hit rate (the number of users that type that particular key term within search). Once this information is collected, you will then need to compare this with the amount of competition for the term.

Don’t forget about the competition

It’s great to aim for a keyword that will pull in thousands of monthly hits. But if the competition is huge for that particular term it’s going to take a lot longer to achieve a good ranking. In terms of optimisation it’s important to strike a balance between the two extremes. With our advice you’ll be able to achieve this important goal.
