In the wake of Google's dispute with the Chinese Government over privacy and Gmail account hacking, social networking service Twitter is developing technology that - it hopes - will prevent governments from censoring its users.
Aimed at both China and Iran, Twitter CEO and co-founder Evan Williams said that developers were creating "interesting hacks". Twitter is already partially blocked in China and, Mr Williams says:
The most productive way to fight that is not by trying to engage China and other governments whose very being is against what we are about. I am hopeful there are technological ways around these barriers.
Twitter has the advantage of being accessed in many different ways, from both the web and mobile applications – making it much harder to censor than a single website.
The Twitter CEO did not wish to reveal information about the new technology, simply to avoid helping censors. However, he did reveal the work was being done by third party developers.
