It's too early to tell whether the news will be welcome to newspapers and magazines who continue to give online content away for free, but a new study has found that UK mobile internet users spend an average of 6.3 hours per week browsing on portable devices, as opposed to only 4.6 hours per week reading newspapers and 3.9 hours reading magazines.
Measured activity included web browsing, search, email, social networks, video and instant messaging – but did not take into account phone calls.
While the number of people who use mobile internet is still in the minority – of the 15,000 people surveyed, only 2,100 were users – the growth potential of the market is huge, especially among younger demographics. Already 43% of 16-24 year olds are using the mobile internet, along with one in four in the 25 to 34 age bracket.
