Google spending spree continues with reMail acquisition

Google has recently been chucking money around like confetti, acquiring a whole range of companies. From Aardvark social search to mobile ad network AdMob and online display ad firm Teracent, these companies all have something to add to Google's core offerings.

The search giant has now dug deep to get its hands on reMail, an app for the iPhone that offers advanced search capabilities. Founder Gabor Cselle has revealed not only that Google has taken over reMail, but that it also intends to discontinue the product.

On the face of it, it's an odd move - but Ben Parr at social media guide Mashable believes he has the answer: it's a 'talent acquisition'.

Cselle will now be joining Gmail as a product manager, suggesting that his talents will be directed wholly at Gmail itself, rather than a peripheral iPhone application.

Keep an eye on Google's own iPhone apps, though - something tells us that something of reMail's functionality will live on.
