For decades we've talked about - and seen - the way that technology converges.
Back in the 1980s, when mobile phones were hideously-expensive brick-like items - of the sort wielded by aristocrats on the cover of the now-defunct Debrett's Magazine - who'd have imagined a cutely-sized iPhone would offer so much functionality less than 25 years later?
The same convergence is happening to search. Not only is it getting more powerful, we can search for more items - web pages, video, news stories, books and so on.
Now Google technicians are looking at ways of turning the humble TV into a search platform. Tests are being conducted using the Android platform, and the idea is that anyone typing "Shameless" or "Antiques Roadshow" into a search box should be able to find details about those programmes, along with stored shows, schedules and more.
The technology could be the catalyst that properly integrates the web and television. The implications for search engine optimisation could also be highly significant, so we'll be keeping a close eye on developments.
