Digital Britain: broadband in every home by 2012

Every home in the UK should have access to broadband by 2012. So states a report published by the government today.

The report details a series of recommendations made by Lord Carter as part of his Digital Britain report. Digital technology is seen as vital to the future success of the UK.

The Prime Minister said that digital technology was as necessary today as “roads, bridges and trains were in the 20th Century”.

There has been some criticism of the report, which claims we’ll all be able to access broadband at speeds of up to 2Mb per second in 2012. The current average is 3.6Mbps.

However, the culture secretary Andy Burnham has responded by stating that “the online age is rewriting the rules… the challenge now is how to build the networks and the infrastructure that helps businesses and consumers get the most from digital.”
