UK shoppers are responsible for nearly one third of all European online sales, according to the Centre for Retail Research (CRR).
In addition, almost 10% of retail sales in the UK are now made online, with consumers spending £38 billion on the web in 2009. Sales are set to grow further this year, with the CRR predicting them to top £42 billion.
By comparison, German shoppers spent £29.7 billion online last year, with the French trailing on £22 billion.
Bruce Fair, of Kelkoo - which commissioned the research - believes that consumers' growing confidence with the web, combined with recession-time bargain hunting, is responsible for the figures: "In these hard times, it is no surprise that shoppers are turning to the internet rather than the High Street, especially when you consider that purchasing items online can result in savings of 20% or more."
