New data from Hitwise shows that Bing has made most gains from search engine traffic for June.
Numbers from the internet research firm show that while Google lost 1%, it still accounted for 71.7% of searches conducted in the US. Bing gained 7% on month compared to May and was the only major search engine to gain share, with Yahoo remaining stable on 14%.
The research shows that Bing is making major gains in specific vertical categories, including shopping, travel, health and automotive, for which Bing has doubled its traffic compared to the same time last year.
Google’s traffic grew in the shopping, travel and automotive categories, while Yahoo’s only grew slightly for shopping and automotive.
Search engines are also becoming more important as a way in which users access industries online. Compared to May, the shopping, social networking, news and media, entertainment, business and finance and automotive categories all saw double-digit increases in traffic coming directly from search engines.
So, good news for Bing, but with such an ongoing market dominance, most search engine optimisation (SEO) efforts will be directed at Google. Only when that begins to change will Bing really know it’s a contender.
