Android users more likely to click on mobile ads

According to statistics compiled by US online advertising network Chitika, Android users are 81% more likely to click on an ad than their iPhone counterparts.

Chitika, which serves around 2 billion online ads to 80,000 websites every month, looked at 1.3 million ads across its network to compile the data. According to the company, the click-through rate on its ads is 0.654% on iPhones, rising to 1.187% on Android devices.

But Chikita is not alone in their assessment. Back in June, mobile ad measurement firm Smaato released statistics that showed that Android had overtaken the iPhone in click-throughs already in May. Smaato’s data also showed that while Nokia’s Symbian was still in the lead overall, its share was declining.

The new statistics follow on the back of Nielsen’s announcement at the beginning of this month that Android had officially overtaken the iPhone in terms of new subscribers, taking 27% of new smartphone sales in the US, compared to Apple’s 23%.

BlackBerry phones are also set to get their own ads with their maker, Research In Motion (RIM), reportedly looking to acquire its own mobile ad network according to the Wall Street Journal.

As more is being spent on mobile marketing, the competition is increasing. According to a new forecast by Borrell Associates, mobile marketing will make up 20% of all online advertising next year. Online advertising itself will continue to be the fastest growing advertising sector with an expected increase of 14% to $51.9 billion.
