Amazon mobile sales top $1 billion

Amazon has announced that its worldwide mobile e-commerce sales have surpassed the $1 billion mark.

The announcement was made in the company’s recently released second quarter earnings report and is the first time Amazon has revealed the proportion of its annual revenue that comes from mobile commerce.

“The leading mobile commerce device today is the smart phone, but we’re excited by the potential of the new category of wireless tablet computers,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, who also cited increasing ease of use as one of the main drivers.

An important part of this is Amazon’s iPhone application and its counterparts – Amazon already has versions of its application for Android and Blackberry smart phones and has recently released a new version designed for the iPad.

Amazon’s 1-Click payment system has also made it easier for customers to use their mobiles to make purchases. The company is currently offering this service to other online retailers though its subsidiary, Amazon Payments.

Total worldwide sales for the second quarter were $6.57 billion, a 41% increase on the same period last year.
