Consumers are getting into the habit of checking out online reviews, with over 84% of them more likely to seek online product opinions than they were a year ago - according to survey results just released by Brand Reputation.
More than 800 consumers were questioned about the way they made buying decisions over the previous two months. Online reviews were found to influence the following proportions of online purchases:
Consumer electronics 56%
Home furnishings 33%
Apparel 21%
White goods 45%
DIY and garden 18%
Entertainment products 12%
Sports goods 9%
Food 2%
Brand Reputation CEO Graeme Crossley summed up the findings and highlighted their importance for e-tailers. "A customer that has a good experience will typically tell 3 to 5 people, but a customer who has a poor experience will tell more than 20. When this is trend occurs via the web, these numbers can rapidly multiply and could spell disaster for brands that don’t have strategies in place to combat online negative chatter."
